Dangers Of Electronic Cigarettes

Electronic cigarettes are seen by many as a healthier alternative to regular tobacco cigarettes, but any intelligent person is going to ask the question: what are the dangers of electronic cigarettes?  It is a reasonable and responsible way to approach the topic and everyone considering electronic cigarettes should be prepared to review the facts.  That is the purpose of this guide in essence, to provide you with solid information so that you can make an informed decision.

You should be aware that E-cigs do contain nicotine, which is an addictive substance.  While the quantity is less and the delivery system is safer, technically the nicotine is present. Traditional tobacco cigarettes contain over 400 dangerous chemicals and compounds, while e-cigs contain less than 10. It seems obvious which one is less dangerous, isn’t it?  While the media sometimes tries to exaggerate the dangers of electronic cigarettes by skewing the facts, studies have shown many of their claims to be false.   One such claim is that they contain an anti-freeze compound called diethylene glycol (DEG), which is said to be as dangerous as tobacco. However, according to recent researches that are conveniently ignored by those opposed to e-cigs, out of 19 cartridges tested only 1 has been found to contain DEG.

What’s With the FDA?

The Food and Drug Administration is the official agency in the U.S. that is responsible for what we eat and drink. Any product approved by the FDA is cataloged as being non-harmful and safe for public use. Why is the FDA so concerned with dangers of electronic cigarettes, while ignoring the obvious dangers of tobacco cigarettes? Well, one theory is that behind the government’s skepticism about electronic cigarettes is that the government makes far more money from taxing traditional cigarettes than from taxing electronic cigs.

We certainly should not jump to the widely spread conclusion that anything that is not approved by the FDA is bad or extremely dangerous. In fact, there are multiple things which the FDA approved that turned out to be extremely dangerous.  Clearly they are not the end all and be all of what is safe.  This does not mean that electronic cigarettes are 100% risk free in all cases.  But if you do your homework and stick to the trusted brands which have been systematically reviewed and evaluated, you strategically position yourself to avoid unnecessary risks.

Do E-Cigs Harm Your Lungs?

This is probably the most common safety concern when it comes to electronic cigarettes. A team from University of Greece lead by Professor Christina Gratziou has tried to determine the short-term side effects of smoking e-cigs. They carried out several experiments on a group of 32 volunteers, of whom 8 have never smoked tobacco cigarettes and the rest of 24 were lifetime smokers. While some lived with asthma or COPD for a long time, others had healthy lungs with no problems whatsoever. Each of them was asked to use an e-cig for at least 10 minutes each day, inhaling the vapors. According to the study, the airways resistance did increase slightly for both smokers and non-smokers. In other words, people who smoke electronic cigarettes are exposed to potential lung conditions and respiratory problems, but on a much smaller scale and level of intensity than smokers of traditional smokers.

While smoking of any kind is never 100% risk free, the dangers of electronic cigarettes are significantly less than smoking tobacco products.  E-cigs have their distinct benefits and are considered a technological breakthrough which should not be ignored. Moreover, they have become a booming trend all across the world. According to Forbes, e-cigs manufactures make over $300 million annually from producing and selling their products. Do your homework and give e-cigs a try, and know that they are a much safer alternative than tobacco cigarettes.
